- Convert grams to decimal pounds when a form or shipping field asks for one value in pounds. For example, 1 lb 8 oz is equal to 1.5 lb, not 1.8 lb.
- Convert grams to milligrams when working with a very small mass that is easier to express in milligrams than as a long decimal in ounces.
- Convert fluid ounces to milliliters when the original measurement is written as fl oz. Fluid ounces measure volume, while grams measure mass, so converting between them requires knowing the density of the substance.
- Explore other weight conversions when you need a different unit. For precious metals, choose Troy ounces rather than standard Ounces, as the two units use different weight standards.
Grams to ounces for recipes: change the unit, not the amount
If a recipe calls for 125 g of butter and your scale uses ounces, enter 125 to get about 4.4092 oz, or 4.41 oz when rounded to two decimal places. If your scale can show grams, it is usually better to weigh 125 g directly.
The same grams-to-ounces conversion works for flour, sugar, honey, and other ingredients because both grams and ounces measure weight. This is different from converting grams to cups or fluid ounces, where the type of ingredient matters.
Scale the recipe before rounding
If you need three batches of 125 g each, add the grams first: 375 g ≈ 13.2277 oz or 13.23 oz rounded to two decimal places. Avoid rounding each 125 g portion to 4.4 oz before multiplying. That gives 13.2 oz and introduces a small rounding difference. Keep the original values during the calculation and round only the final result.
For parcels, use the packed weight
If an item weighs 680 g and the box and padding add another 70 g, use the full packed weight of 750 g. This is about 26.46 oz, or 1 lb 10.46 oz.
Use total ounces when a form asks for one value in ounces. Use pounds and ounces when the form has separate lb and oz fields.
This calculator converts the measured weight only. It does not estimate shipping charges. Carriers may use their own rounding, package size, and billing rules, so check those separately. Changing the calculator to one decimal place does not apply a carrier’s shipping rules.

How the calculation and rounding work
To convert grams to ounces, divide the weight in grams by 28.349523125. For example, 100 g ≈ 3.52739619 oz.
There are exactly 16 ounces in 1 pound. If the result is more than 16 oz, the calculator converts each full 16 oz into pounds and shows the remaining ounces separately. For example, 26.46 oz = 1 lb 10.46 oz because 16 oz makes 1 lb, leaving 10.46 oz.
Automatic mode shows up to eight decimal places. You can also choose 1, 2, or 3 decimal places for a simpler result. If the remaining ounces round up to 16, they are carried into the next pound. This means a value just below 1 lb may display as 1 lb 0.0 oz after rounding.
More decimal places make the conversion more detailed, but they do not make your scale more accurate. For example, 0.1 oz is about 2.835 g. A scale that measures in 0.1 oz steps may not show every 1 g difference. For small recipe amounts, use grams when your scale gives a more precise reading in grams.
Common questions about grams to ounces
Is 28 grams exactly one ounce?
No. One ordinary weight ounce is exactly 28.349523125 g. A 28 g portion is about 0.9877 oz. Treat 28 g as a quick estimate, not an exact replacement when scaling a recipe.
Does the ingredient change the grams-to-ounces result?
No, when both values measure weight. 100 g of flour and 100 g of honey each weigh about 3.5274 oz. They occupy different volumes, so converting either amount to cups or fluid ounces requires ingredient-specific density information.
Why does my kitchen scale show a different ounce value?
Check that the scale is in oz rather than fl oz, and that the container has been tared. Then compare the display increments: a scale showing tenths of an ounce will display 100 g as about 3.5 oz, while this calculator can show more digits. Extra digits do not improve the accuracy of the original weighing.
Can I enter the result straight into a shipping form?
Use the weight of the fully packed parcel, including the box and padding. This calculator provides the converted physical weight in total ounces and pounds plus remaining ounces. It does not calculate billable weight, apply carrier rounding, or account for package dimensions; check the requirements of the shipping service before submitting.
